References¶
The References area in Paperwork holds both read-only reference tables, such as EWC codes, and editable tables that contain details specific to the organisation, like Vehicles.
Before you Start¶
Before getting started, there are a couple of helpful things to know:
- References is the last area within the Settings module
- Despite being the last area, it is wise to set it up at the start of your organisation's Paperwork journey as the information held in References is pulled into other areas of the platform
- The References area contains both editable and read-only tables
What is the References Area?¶
The References area is a series of tables that hold information used across Paperwork. There are both read-only reference tables, storing information that can't be changed like EWC codes, and editable reference tables that allow the user to enter information specific to their organisation that can be pulled elsewhere.
Read-Only references hold data that cannot be changed. These usually come from an external source and are not specific to the organisation. For example, this could include EWC (European Waste Catalogue) codes, which are external and applied across the waste industry. Or these could be something specific to Paperwork but not specific to the organisation, for example Vehicle Tax Status Options which are limited to "Not Taxed for Road Use", "SORN", "Taxed", or "Untaxed" with any other options not being relevant.
Editable references hold data that could vary depending on the organisation, and thus can be added by users. For example, Container Types available would vary by organisation. The Container Types references table allows a user to input what types of containers the organisation has and details associated with those containers e.g. the number of labels to apply and whether it can be collected with other containers.
The information held in the References section can be used across Paperwork, and it is referenced in different forms throughout the software.
Read-Only and Editable
Reference tables can be either Read-Only, which means they can not be added to or edited by the user, or Editable, which means users can add information to them and update the details held within the table.
