Codes¶
Waste management regulations rely on a structured framework to ensure the safe handling and disposal of various waste streams. Central to this framework are the EWC (European Waste Catalogue), HP (Hazardous Property), and RD (Recovery and Disposal) codes. Each code serves a distinct purpose in classifying waste and guiding appropriate management practices.
EWC Codes¶
EWC codes provide a systematic classification system for various types of waste, aiding in regulatory compliance and simplifying waste management processes. They are primarily used for waste identification and reporting purposes across the European Union, including in waste transfer notes in the UK.
HP Codes¶
HP codes are instrumental in identifying hazardous properties present in waste materials, ensuring safe handling, transportation, and disposal in accordance with regulatory requirements. They are commonly used in hazardous waste consignment notes required for the movement of hazardous waste in the UK.
RD Codes¶
RD codes categorise waste management methods, distinguishing between recovery for reuse or recycling and disposal through landfilling or other means. This classification facilitates informed decision-making to promote sustainability and minimise environmental impact in waste management practices. They are also commonly used in hazardous waste consignment notes.
